In 2008 someone named S, prayed about changing her job and joining another corporation. It seemed like it was the Lord’s will for this person to do so and she did. The financial crisis hit the whole world soon after. Many got retrenched. Some colleagues of S began to discuss with her about who was going next. But S told her colleague that she did not want to talk about it and boldly declared that she would not be the one.
One Sunday while we were collecting the tithes and offerings, I was led by the Spirit of the Lord to say this to the congregation: “God needs me to do what He has planned for me to do through this church, and I need you to help me to do what God wants us to do through this church. I need your tithes and offerings. And you need your jobs. So you will not lose your job because I need you.” And I had the members make this confession together with me.
Obey the Prompting of the Holy Spirit
One day in the first quarter of 2009 S had a prompting to pray. S yielded to that prompting and prayed. Then S realised that the Lord was leading her to pray concerning her promotion.
Two weeks later S’ boss asked her to take over her superior’s position as he was moving over to another area within the organisation.
S had all along been praying in the prayer group and in the focus groups for a few years now. Yet when the time came the Holy Spirit still needed S to pray.
The lessons learnt from S’ experience are:
1. Though S had been praying in the different groups consistently yet when the time came there was still a need to pray very specifically as the Holy Spirit directed.
2. Was there a need for her to pray? Obviously yes, or else why would the Holy Spirit have prompted S?
3. Would S have got the promotion if S had not yielded to the prompting to pray and no one else prayed for her concerning this matter? Probably not. If S could then there was no necessity to pray.
4. Why did the Lord prompt S to pray by the Holy Spirit? The reason could be that the devil may have been influencing to block the promotion.
5. Does the Lord care about her promotion? Yes, He cares for every aspect of your life. So the promotion is part of God plan for S’ life.
6. It is important to realise that S stayed in the prayer group and prayer focus groups so it helped her to recognise the promptings of the Holy Spirit and it helped S to be more yielded to the Holy Spirit. When she was faced with such a situation she yielded and did not miss it.
7. Despite the financial crisis bringing about retrenchments everywhere, S kept confessing that she would not be the one retrenched as she believed that she would have what she said. Also S has been faithful in paying her tithes and in her offerings.
When the Holy Spirit leads us to pray we cannot override Him by our confession of faith (or what we believe). Many Christians miss it here. They may have heard from God that promotion will come or blessing will come. But when the time comes and the Holy Spirit is leading them to do something or to pray or to go somewhere, instead of obeying His leading they disobey Him. They continue to confess that “promotion is mine” and miss it altogether. You may be standing on the promises given by the Word of God but do not ignore the leading, the prompting, the inner voice, the witness of the Holy Spirit, or your conscience.
You cannot override the leading of the Holy Spirit with your confession, your believing and your status quo.
When the Holy Spirit prompts,
YOU PRAY IT
and
YOU SAY IT!
Say what God is saying to you.
