Building The Church
In Matthew 16:18-19 “and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
Jesus is saying that through His power, the church will overcome the powers of evil and death itself. That whatever advances we have as a church, the devil will not be able to withstand. Jesus is giving the authority to the church as the advocates for God’s way and the ones who spread the message of salvation. We are actually all gatekeepers in the church. When we preach the gospel, we are actually transferring people from death to life, into the kingdom of heaven.
In 1 Corinthians 3:10-15, grace was given to Paul to plant new churches. Paul reemphasized that the foundation that has already been laid is and will only be Jesus. Jesus is the only stability of the church community.
When we serve in Church every week, do we bring our most precious materials to lay? Or do we use perishable materials to build?
In the story of Mary and Martha, Jesus did not admonish Martha for serving. Serving is a good thing, but sitting at Jesus’ feet which Mary chose was better. Jesus told Martha, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
When we lead a Christ-centred life, good works should naturally flow out. But good works do not produce a Christ-centred life.
